CHARLOTTESVILLE – The University of Virginia’s Board of Visitors has changed the name of the school’s largest library. After opening for the Spring Semester following major renovations, the board has named it after Edgar Shannon, the University of Virginia’s fourth president. Shannon’s legacy includes pushing for co-education and racial integration. The former namesake was UVa’s first President, Edwin Alderman, who was a supporter of eugenics.
The renaming comes after myriad petitions urging a name change, and some against. Visitor John Nau said in his two terms on the board, “I’ve never had one where it was so emotional.”
