Marina Theresia Sanusi, M.D., 92, passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2024.
She was born June 15, 1931, in Sidoarjo, Indonesia to the late Oen Sing Gwan and Tijo Siong Nio.
She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 47 years, I. Daniel Sanusi, M.D. of Charlottesville, Virginia and brother Jusuf Samaoen of Surabaya, Indonesia; and survived by her son, H. David Sanusi M.D. and his wife, Lisa, and their four children, Jeremy, Matthew, Joseph (Ashley), and Anna, of Marietta, Georgia; her son, H. August Sanusi M.D. and his wife, Martha and their five children, Marina Bohuk (Roman), Olivia, Juliette, Eliza and Brayden, of Charlottesville, Virginia; and her daughter, Monica Gelé and her three children, Julia, Emma and Vivian, of New Orleans, Louisiana; and great grandchild Nikolai Bohuk of Charlottesville, Virginia.
Born in Sidoarjo, Indonesia, as Oen Hwie Goat, her name changed at the urging of the Indonesian government. She met her future husband, Dan, in high school after which they enrolled together in Airlangga School of Medicine, in Surabaya, Indonesia.
After medical school, she became a resident in neurology and psychiatry at Airlangga before immigrating to America with her family in 1970, and completing further residency training at LSU Medical School in Shreveport, Louisiana becoming board certified in neurology and psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She worked as clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at LSU Medical School in Shreveport, Louisiana, went into private practice and then joined the staff at Shreveport Mental Health Center as a child psychiatrist for over 30 years.
She retired and then moved to Charlottesville, Virginia in 2006. She will be forever be remembered for her devotion to family as a loving wife, mom, and “Oma”; her incredible journey as an Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia cancer survivor 41 years in remission; her seamstress abilities; her gift of cooking Indonesian and Dutch cuisine; her green thumb particularly with roses and orchids; her sweet soft-spoken demeanor and the infinite wisdom and advice she provided to so many people over the years.
