HARRISONBURG, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Following a similar move last month by the Orange County School Board, the Rockingham County School Board Monday night voted to leave the Charlottesville-based Virginia School Boards Association. A 3-to-1 majority claims the VSBA has become “too liberal” and voted to vacate the association by the end of the month. The lone dissenting vote was Jackie Lohr who told fellow members that bailing out of an association they don’t align with only serves to take a conservative voice out of the conversation.
“We no longer have a voice, we no longer have a vote, but they area big, big machine that will continue to lobby… and they have the ears of a lot of politicians”, Lohr said.
But board chair Matt Cross said more school boards around Virginia area flipping to more conservative boards.
“You’re seeing more people leave the VSBA, and we do see a networking between those boards”, said Cross.
Once separated from the VSBA, the board plans to join the conservative-leaning School Board Member Alliance that operates on an individual member-by-member basis.
