Ivan was born in New Jersey, beloved son of Abe and Roslyn, and lived in North Bergen with his sister, Sheila. He loved his parents’ shops, Login’s Fabrics, and fishing off the piers and big boats for flounder with his Dad. He bravely attended the University of Pennsylvania at age 16, graduating Cum Laude, Biology, before continuing to Cornell Medical School. He spent time at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine and Hershey Medical Center, then joined the University of Virginia (UVA) as a Resident Neurologist. This launched his nearly 40-year career in Neurology as a top-class physician, researcher and educator. In the mid 70s, he also spent 2 years of service in the Navy, in Charleston, South Carolina, before returning to UVA.
In 1969, Ivan married his camp sweetheart from the Catskills, Marsha, and they spent nearly 55 beautiful years together. They established firm roots in Viriginia and had daughters, Jessica and Stephanie, in 1972 and 1975. They welcomed sons-in-law Dan and Matt into the family, followed by granddaughters Ella, Cira and Hadas, who were treasures to Ivan. Ivan was a true family man, always making time to be together. He adored Marsha, his daughters, and his granddaughters.
Ivan had many passions. He loved neurology- teaching, seeing patients and researching. He published scores of articles and received many, many distinguishing awards. He patented a pituitary cell and co-created a successful app for neuro-ophthalmology. One of his final projects, The Medical Mystery of Pio Pico, was a tremendous joy to him, co-researched with daughter, Jessica. Ivan was an extremely kind, patient, meticulous and caring physician- who left no stone unturned- and he was completely dedicated to helping others and advancing science.
Ivan also loved music and woodworking, photography and travel, gardening, and when he was young, he was a keen swimmer. He was honest, silly, compassionate and present.
Ivan was one of the greats, and his family and friends will miss him dearly.
Thank you to everyone for your sincere friendship, kind support and love.
