On April 23, 2023, at approximately 3:00 a.m., Sergeant Dickson attempted to stop a motor vehicle in the area of Independence Road and Boston Road, in Unionville, VA. He suspected the driver was possibly intoxicated based on the driving behavior.
When Sgt. Dickson activated his emergency equipment to conduct a traffic stop, the vehicle failed to stop, and a pursuit ensued. The pursuit lasted for approximately 11 minutes and went several miles. Deputy Christian Amos joined the pursuit to assist while Deputy Daniel Devine was able to successful deploy Stop Sticks, flattening 3 of the 4 tires on the suspect vehicle. This slowed and eventually disabled the vehicle.
During the pursuit items were observed being tossed out the window. The vehicle came to a stop on Zachary Taylor Highway and Independence Road and the driver was taken into custody.
The items that were thrown from the vehicle during the pursuit were located and determined to be methamphetamine. Also located on the driver were Psilocybin mushrooms as well as packaging materials and scales recovered from the vehicle.
Shane Dillon Shifflett, 40, of Charlottesville was arrested and charged with the following:
- Fail to drive on the right side of roadway
- Felony Elude
- Driving revoked DUI related
- Possession of Sch I/II Psilocybin mushrooms
- Possession of Sch I/II with intent to sell methamphetamine.
Shane Dillon Shifflett is currently being held at Central Virginia Regional Jail under no bond.
