Mattie Williams, affectionately known as Aunt Bug, passed away peacefully in her home in Barboursville, Virginia, on Saturday, March 30th, 2024, at the age of 84. Born on December 13th, 1939, in the rugged mountain country she called home, Mattie was a beacon of strength and resilience, embodying the spirit of her ancestors.

A woman of indomitable spirit, Mattie possessed a deep-rooted love for her family and community. She was always there to lend a helping hand, quietly supporting those in need without ever asking for anything in return. Mattie’s unwavering belief in self-reliance and independence inspired those around her to stand tall in the face of adversity.

As a mother, grandmother, and guardian, Mattie’s love and dedication extended to her entire family. She nurtured and supported each member, instilling in them values of resilience, self-reliance, and love. While she played a significant role in raising her granddaughter Megan, Mattie’s love and influence touched the lives of all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Among her grandchildren are Lily, Harley, Joseph, and Ashleigh, while her great-grandchildren include Ella Jade, Milo, Tucker Wade, and Nova Rose.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Howard, her parents Lilly and Herman whom she adored, her sister Thelma, and her brothers Norman, Thurman, Charles, and James. Their memories will forever remain cherished in the hearts of those who knew and loved them

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Mattie’s life at a visitation on Wednesday, April 3rd, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Hill and Wood Funeral Home in Charlottesville. A graveside funeral service will be held on Friday, April 5th, at 11:00 AM at Holly Memorial Cemetery.

Mattie’s legacy of love and resilience will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her. May she rest in peace, knowing she was deeply loved and will be dearly missed.
