CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The public has a chance tonight to weigh in on proposed tax increases City Manager Sam Sanders outlined March 5th in his 2025 budget unveiling. Sanders has proposed raising the real estate tax by 2-cents from 96-cents per $100 assessed value to 98-cents for a revenue increase of more than $2.2-million over this year. Sanders also proposes raising the lodging tax from 8 to 9% for a little over $1-million increased revenue, and the meals tax from 6.5 to 7.5% for a more than $3-million revenue increase.

Tonight’s regular business meeting begins at 6:30, and the tax rates hearing it the first action item on the agenda. Sanders says the proposal reflects the priorities Council has set, and comprehensive plan implementations. He said while he’s found some savings inside city government, more revenues are necessary.
