CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Sunday morning’s shooting at the 5th St. Taco Bell is being investigated as a self-defense incident, Charlottesville Chief of Police Michael Kochis said Tuesday.

The shooter remained on the scene and cooperated with police after the incident, which occurred around 9 a.m.

“Two individuals who knew each other had some of type a dispute,” Kochis said. “They engaged with each other at the Taco Bell. One person pulled out a weapon. Another person pulled out their own weapon, which was a firearm, and shot the person in the shoulder. Thankfully it was non-life-threatening injuries. We’re working with the commonwealth attorney now to determine appropriate charges. But on its face, preliminarily, it does look like self-defense.”

CPD had previously announced that the victim was transported to UVA Health with non-life-threatening injuries.

Also Tuesday, Kochis said Monday’s 3A Task Force raid of a resident on Madison Ave. was “part of a larger investigation” related to a gang and drug investigation. He did not have any details on what was seized from inside the house.

“A lot goes into an operation like that,” Kochis said. “It all has to do with safety: safety of the officers involved, safety of those in the house and safety of the community.”

Kochis said the case is not related to an FBI operation near Hartman’s Mill Rd. in the city earlier this month.
