CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – A Monticello High School student is recovering after a suspected overdose Monday at the school, according to a Tuesday email to families from Acting Superintendent Dr. Chandra Hayes. And the school division acknowledged it failed to notify the public in the timeline prescribed by Virginia law.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:07 p.m. Monday on school premises. A school nurse administered NARCAN and called 911, as well as the student’s family, according to the email. The student was transported from the school for care and “is recovering,” the email said.

Hayes told families it’s unclear what specific substance caused the overdose, but the initial investigation indicated it was consumed through a vape.

“If we learn the name or additional identifying features of the substance, or if any information in this notice proves inaccurate, we will send you an update,” Hayes wrote.

According to the email, “state law requires this notice within 24 hours. It is reaching you later than that, and we regret the delay. We are reviewing why notification procedures were not properly followed to make sure it does not happen again.”
