CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Westwood Hills Elementary School, site of a Sept. 8 school shooting, will reopen Thursday, Waynesboro Public Schools announced, as the division continues to revamp security measures.

Staff will return to the school Monday for support, trauma-informed training, and to prepare their classrooms. On Tuesday, the division will host a “Family Open House” from 3-6 p.m. as part of the re-opening process. Staff will use Wednesday to make final preparations while receiving continued crisis-recovery support.

Then, on Thursday, Westwood Hills will re-open “for students and families who are ready to return,” according to information on the division’s website.

“Recovery is personal, and WPS recognizes that students and families will not all be ready on the same timeline,” the division stated in its announcement.

A gunman forced his way into the building on Sept. 2, wounding a staff member before taking his own life in the library. Students were safely locked down after Anthony I. Ignatiadis-Isabelle, 19, of Augusta County, shot through a rear door with a 20-gauge shotgun, according to the Waynesboro Police Department.

WPD will have a campus presence during the re-opening and an officer, Sgt. Evan Bourne, has been assigned to Westwood Hills, the division announced. Other security enhancements are being made at the city’s schools.

The division has an independent company, VACORP, conducting a security assessment of Waynesboro schools.

The division has asked the public not to show up on Thursday with “signs, balloons or other displays,” hoping to keep the day as normal as possible.

“September 17 is an important milestone, not a finish line,” the division website said. “WPS will continue to listen, learn, adjust, and provide support for students, staff and families for as long as recovery requires.”
