CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – A 48-year-old Madison Heights woman was arrested Tuesday after attempting to bring a firearm into Monticello High School, according to an Albemarle County Police Department announcement.
Bridget L. Counts has been charged with felony possession of a firearm on school property, and a misdemeanor concealed carry charge, after the gun was detected as she tried to enter the school building at approximately 9:45 a.m. A School Resource Officer was notified of the potential weapons violation. The officer made contact with the woman who was flagged and she disclosed she was carrying a firearm in her purse. Officers secured the weapon and took the suspect into custody without incident.
County high schools began requiring anyone entering the building to pass through a walk-through metal detector last year.
ACPD determined there was no ongoing threat to the school, and the incident was resolved without disruption to school operations, according to ACPD.
Counts was released on an unsecured bond.
