CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) — Virginia women’s soccer continued its season-opening homestand Thursday evening, facing La Salle at Klöckner Stadium.

Head coach Steve Swanson’s squad, seeking to take nine of nine possible points in their first three games of the season, did so in explosive fashion, hammering seven past La Salle’s defense in a rout of the visitors.

Addison Halpern led the way with two goals, bringing her goal total this season to four. Brazilian transfer Gio Canali notched her second goal of the year, and four more Cavaliers checked in with their first goals of the season — Tatum Galvin, Jordyn Hardemann, Carrie Helfrich, and Kira Waller. 

The homestand continues for the Cavaliers, as they welcome James Madison on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Yale on Sunday at 1 p.m. 

In international football news, both Pearl Cecil and Canali were named to the U-20 Women’s World Cup rosters for Team USA, and Brazil respectively. 

Men’s soccer started its campaign last week with a match against UCLA. With several high-profile departures in the offseason, the new Cavaliers struggled to gel together, dropping the contest 2-1 to the visiting Bruins.

Logan Hall scored for UCLA in the first half before Marco Dos Santos equalized for the Cavaliers in the second. Virginia’s defense was beaten again in the final ten minutes of the match however, as Zach Neuls headed the winning goal home with nine minutes to spare. 

Virginia has a ranked battle Monday night with No. 16 High Point, beginning at 6 p.m. from Klöckner Stadium, before facing American at home Friday at 6 p.m. 

Basketball 

Women’s basketball’s non-conference schedule was announced last week ahead of Aaron Rousell’s first season as head coach.

November will feature two high-profile in-state matchups, with the Cavaliers travelling to Norfolk to face old rival Old Dominion for the first time in seven years on Nov. 15. UVA with then welcome James Madison to John Paul Jones Arena on Nov. 19. 

Virginia will also face Kentucky at the Sprouts Farmers Market ESPNW Invitational on December 20 in Nashville, along with either Oklahoma or UAB in the Jacksonville Classic November 23-25.

Men’s basketball also had an important non-conference matchup added to its schedule, as it will face Arkansas in the Capital Showcase, from the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 8.

Golf 

Men’s golf announced its 2026-27 schedule last week. The back-to-back ACC champions will start play on Sept. 15 at the Inverness Country Club in Toledo, then compete in the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational at Colonial Country Club before hosting the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial Tournament in Charlottesville for the event’s sixth edition in the spring.

Football 

Two former UVA wide receivers saw their NFL teams face each other in the second week of the preseason slate. 

The New York Giants took down the Miami Dolphins by a score of 26-3 on Saturday, and though neither player saw action, Charlottesville native Malachi Fields met up with his former Virginia teammate Malik Washington and swapped jerseys. 

Fields played all four of his undergraduate years at UVA before closing his collegiate career at Notre Dame in 2025. Washington, in his single year at UVA, the 2023 season, led the entirety of the NCAA in receptions.
