CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – 5th District Republican Rep. John McGuire and his Democratic challenger, Tom Perriello, have both been invited to a pair of televised debates, one in Charlottesville and one in Lynchburg, multiple sources told Cville Right Now.

So far, only Perriello has accepted.

“We have agreed to every debate invitation we have received, including at least two that will be televised,” Perriello spokesperson Brytan Mendes told Cville Right on Tuesday. “Our position is that we want to participate in as many debates as possible.”

While Perriello’s campaign said he has accepted the invitation from CBS19 in Charlottesville and WSET in Lynchburg, it’s unclear whether or not McGuire will follow suit.

McGuire spokesperson Brittany Slaughter told Cville Right Now the candidate was “not available for comment.” She did not say whether or not McGuire’s campaign had accepted or rejected any of the debate invitations.

In 2024, McGuire and his Democratic opponent, Gloria Witt, met for one debate, on Oct. 17 at Hampden-Sydney College in Farmville.

This week, Beth Macy – the Democratic challenger in the 6th District – challenged Republican incumbent Ben Cline to a series of three debates ahead of November’s midterm elections.
