CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The major thunderstorm that crossed the Albemarle County and Charlottesville area around 5:30 p.m. Friday, bringing heavy rain, large hail and high winds, downed trees and power lines and caused at least one fire.

A lightning strike is believed to be the cause of a structure fire at a single-family home in the 1000 block of East Keswick Drive in Keswick around 6 p.m., according to the Albemarle County Fire Department. No one was injured but an adult, a juvenile and two pet dogs were displaced by the blaze.

Saturday morning, the county announced that Darden Towe Park “will remain closed for the immediate future while crews work to safely clear downed trees and debris throughout the park.”

“The closure is necessary to protect the safety of visitors and staff while cleanup and assessment efforts are underway,” a statement from the County said.

Thousands of Dominion Energy customers lost power during the storm, and – according to the company’s website – about 3,500 in Albemarle and Charlottesville were still without power as of Saturday morning.

A tree fell on Interstate 64 East on Friday evening, causing a traffic backup near mile marker 128.

A downed tree on 250 West backed up traffic Friday evening, between Hydraulic Rd. and McIntyre Park.
