CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW)- Virginia and former basketball coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton have reached a settlement on her dismissal.

Terms of the settlement were not made public.

“The recent resolution of this matter allows everyone to move forward, and I welcome that opportunity,” Agugua-Hamilton said in a statement provided to The Associated Press on Monday. “I am proud of my career, grateful to every player and coach whose path has crossed mine, and excited for what is to come next. My passion for coaching has always been less about wins and losses and more about making a positive difference in the lives of young people. That passion remains as strong as ever.”

Agugua-Hamilton was fired on April 4, a week after she led the Cavaliers to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2000. She went 70-58, including a 29-42 mark in ACC play. Virginia became the first double-digit seed to reach the regional semifinals since 2022 and pulled off the upset of the tournament, knocking off No. 2 seed Iowa on the road in double overtime in the second round.

They became the first First Four team to advance that far before falling to TCU.

“It was a privilege to coach the remarkable young women who wore the Virginia jersey,” Agugua-Hamilton said. “Thank you for your commitment, your resilience, and allowing me to be a part of your journey. The relationships we built and the memories we created will always hold a special place in my heart.”

The school did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Before coaching at Virginia, Agugua-Hamilton led Missouri State to a 74-15 record from 2020-22, which featured two NCAA Tournament appearances.

Basketball

Eli Bennett, the son of former Virginia basketball coach Tony Bennett, has accepted a position in the Indiana Pacers organization, a source told Cville Right Now on Monday. The younger Bennett will become an associate coach and video assistant.

Eli Bennett started his college career at Charlotte in 2021. He played for his father as a walk-on at UVA in the 2024-25 season, the elder Bennett’s final year before retiring, and had a steal that led to a basket in the final minute of his father’s last home game at John Paul Jones Arena.

Eli Bennett coached junior varsity basketball at St. Anne’s-Belfield this past winter and now will work under Pacers coach Rick Carlisle, a UVA alum, in an organization full of Charlottesville connections. Pacers assistant Jenny Boucek went to UVA, and former Cavaliers center Jay Huff plays there.

Former UVA assistant coach Johnny Carpenter was with the team this past season, before leaving earlier this month to become an assistant coach and head of player development for the Milwaukee Bucks.

Tony Bennett is currently working as the NBA Draft Advisor for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Rowing

Six UVA rowers competed at the U23 World Rowing Championships over the weekend in Duisberg, Germany.  Representing the U.S., Elsa Hartman and Lila Henn earned a gold medal each, with Hartman on the winning women’s eight crew, and Henn in the winning boat of the women’s quadruple sculls.  Henn and company took down rowing powerhouse Great Britain in the quadruple sculls by a full five seconds.  Hartman and crew also pipped Team GB in the woman’s eight by seven seconds.

Elsewhere in the competition, Emma Alimbau-Borràs won a bronze medal alongside the rest of Spain women’s four crew.

Ayla O’Neil, representing Ireland, was on the seventh-place crew in the same race.

Paula Lutz, a native of Mannheim, Germany, took fourth in the women’s single skulls.

Finally, Riley Richardson, rowing for Canada, was on the fifth-place crew in the women’s eight.

Virginia rowing begins its 2026-27 campaign at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston on Oct. 19.

Tennis

UVA men’s tennis star Dylan Dietrich was at home in Switzerland last week competing in the Dialetic Zug ATP Challenger Tour Event.  Dietrich had earned a wild card entry into the singles draw, and began his run taking down Tomas Barrios Vera, the No. 2 seed in the draw and the 139th ranked player in the world.   He saw off Max Alcala Gurri and Harold Mayot to reach his first ever ATP Challenger Tour semifinal against Thiago Seyboth Wild in straight sets.

Swimming

The Commonwealth Games got underway in Glasgow, Scotland, on Friday and two UVA swimmers, one alumna and one incoming first-year, are competing for South Africa at the event.

Aimee Canny has already won a pair of medals three days into the event, silver in the 100m breaststroke and bronze in the 4×100 freestyle relay.  On Canny’s relay team was incoming first-year Jessica Thompson.  Both Cavaliers will be competing throughout the remainder of the event, set to end Wednesday.

Lacrosse

Alongside a member of the UVA women’s lacrosse coaching staff, goalkeeping specialist Kady Glynn, who will be minding the net for Germany, Virginia alumna Abby Manalang is anchoring the midfield for the Philippines at the 2026 World Lacrosse Championship in Tokyo.

Glynn and Germany fell in a dramatic overtime defeat to Wales on Saturday, while Manalang and the Philippines took down Czechia 11-5 early Monday. Pool play is set to end Tuesday.
