CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) — As the division continues to grapple with the fallout of a former staffer’s arrest, the Albemarle School Board has planned a public hearing for its recommended new policy regarding professional boundaries and prevention of sexual misconduct and abuse.

The new policy will be discussed by the board during its meeting this upcoming Thursday evening before the public will have the opportunity to share their thoughts the following Thursday, July 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the Lane Auditorium at the Albemarle County Office Building.

Those who wish to speak at the hearing can sign up at the School Board’s webpage starting on Monday at 9 a.m. Those who are unable to attend can also submit comments by email to schoolboard@k12albemarle.org.

The policy comes just over a month after the arrest of former Hollymead staffer Michael Swiney on charges of sex crimes involving children. In the aftermath, ACPS Superintendent Matthew Haas was asked to resign by the board at its last meeting, and Hollymead Principal Joe McCauley was placed on administrative leave days later.

This Thursday’s school board meeting will also be the first with Dr. Chandra Hayes serving as Acting Superintendent.
