CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – As the nation celebrates its 250th anniversary, communities across Central Virginia are preparing for one of the region’s biggest Independence Day celebrations in years.

A new addition to this year’s festivities will be Charlottesville’s free Independence Day celebration at Tonsler Park, where community members can enjoy a full day of basketball, music, food and family-friendly activities before a professionally managed fireworks show lights up the sky.

The event is hosted by the Charlottesville Police Department, The Tonsler League and DJ Runway, who are inviting residents to celebrate together with what organizers describe as a day focused on community, hometown pride and fun.

Festivities begin with the annual Tonsler League Tournament, featuring some of the area’s top basketball talent, followed by food vendors, games, activities and music from DJ Runway throughout the day. The celebration will also include a special All-Star matchup with Richmond’s OTH League and a Jr. Tonsler League showcase before fireworks cap off the evening around 9 p.m.

Carter Mountain Orchard

For many locals, Carter Mountain Orchard offers one of the area’s most iconic viewing experiences. Perched above Charlottesville, the orchard’s annual “Happy Birthday America” celebration combines panoramic views with live music, local food vendors and fireworks after sunset.

Tickets are required and organizers encourage visitors to arrive early as parking is expected to fill quickly.

Boar’s Head Resort

Boar’s Head Resort will host its annual Independence Celebration, with fireworks expected around 9 p.m. as part of the resort’s holiday weekend festivities.

The Albemarle County Fire department urges residents to leave fireworks to the professionals. Additionally, the Charlottesville Fire Department is reminding residents that all fireworks, including sparklers, are prohibited within the City of Charlottesville, regardless of whether they are legal elsewhere in Virginia.

Officials say illegal fireworks pose significant fire and injury risks and that violations can result in confiscation, criminal charges and prosecution as a Class 1 misdemeanor. The department says it will maintain a zero-tolerance approach to unauthorized fireworks within city limits.

“The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to leave them to trained professionals,” Fire Chief Michael Thomas said in a statement. “We encourage everyone to celebrate responsibly and join us for a safe, family-friendly community event.”
