CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – An officer and a suspect exchanged gunfire near Market Street Park early Saturday morning, according to a Charlottesville Police Department announcement. Neither the suspect nor the officer was injured.

Daquan Alonte Hoffman, wanted by Albemarle County Police on a charge of malicious wounding, was spotted near the Downtown Mall. Hoffman fled on foot when approached by an officer.

“During the foot pursuit several shots were fired, at which point Mr. Hoffman continued to flee,” the CPD release stated.

Hoffman remains at large.

He is wanted on charges of malicious wounding, use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and shooting into an occupied dwelling. The charges stem from an April 25 incident that injured one person in the 600 block of Lockesley Terrace, ACPD spokesperson Logan Bogert told Cville Right Now.

Because the incident is an officer involved shooting, the Virginia State Police will investigate, along with the Commonwealth’s Attorney Office. The officer who fired the shots has been placed on administrative leave, per department policy, and CPD Chief Michael Kochis has briefed the city’s Police Civilian Oversight Board.

CPD announced, on social media, that it had responded to a report of shots fired in the area of Market Street Park and East Jefferson St. at approximately 3 a.m. Saturday.

In 2014, Hoffman, then 18, was arrested and charged with shooting into an occupied vehicle in Stanardsville. He pled guilty and was sentenced to six years in prison, with five years of his sentence suspended, according to court records.

In 2015, he was arrested by the Jefferson Area Drug Task Force and charged with possession of cocaine and a firearm. He pled guilty to three charges and was sentenced to seven years in prison, with all but one year and four months suspended.

In 2017, he was arrested for violating his probation and sentenced to five years in prison.

CPD asks anyone with information on Hoffman’s whereabouts to contact crime stoppers at 434-977-4000.
