CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Chinese food and burgers are making their way back to a pair of Charlottesville-area shopping centers.

The former Peter Chang China Grill location at Barracks Road will be replaced by a new Peter Chang restaurant, according to signage at the location.

And where Burger Bach once operated in The Shops at Stonefield, signage is up for a Shake Shack location.

The Burger Bach at 2050 Bond St. closed in September 2024, while Peter Chang China Grill closed its doors in October.

Representatives from both restaurant groups did not respond to requests for comments from Cville Right Now.

According to city-issued work permits at the Peter Chang location, the location will receive $455,000 of renovations and repairs. A black and white banner at the restaurant touts it as “coming soon.”

Shake Shack bills itself as “a modern day “roadside” burger stand serving a classic American menu of premium burgers, hot dogs, crinkle-cut fries, shakes, frozen custard, beer and wine. With its fresh and simple, high-quality food at a great value, Shake Shack is a fun and lively community-gathering place with widespread appeal,” according to the company’s website.

The nearest current locations are in Short Pump, Richmond and Midlothian.

Peter Chang is a former Chinese embassy chef whose chain of Szechuan-style restaurants includes locations in Virginia, Washington D.C. and Maryland. The closest Chang offerings to this area are in Fredericksburg and Short Pump.
