CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Virginia State Police is investigating a serious crash that occurred near mile marker 96 on eastbound Interstate 64 at approximately 9:33 a.m. Thursday morning.
An oversized load was traveling in the right lane at approximately 35 mph with pilot vehicles positioned in front of and behind the load. A white Subaru traveling in the left lane was reportedly cut off by a pickup truck that abruptly changed lanes from the right lane into the left lane to avoid the pilot vehicle.
The Subaru braked suddenly, lost control, and struck the rear passenger side of the oversized tractor-trailer. The vehicle then crossed back into the right lane and into the median, striking an embankment. The Subaru caught fire following the crash.
The driver and a juvenile passenger were assisted from the vehicle by passersby prior to the vehicle becoming fully engulfed. Both were transported to UVA Medical Center with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
The pickup truck continued eastbound on Interstate 64 from the 96-mile marker and did not stop. The vehicle is described as a white pickup truck with a camper shell on the bed and orange reflective tape around the top of the shell. The driver was described as an adult white male with a beard.
Virginia State Police is asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash, has information about the pickup truck, or may have dash camera footage to contact Virginia State Police Division 1 Dispatch at #77 on a cellular phone or 540-444-7784.
