CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Tony Bennett left an indelible mark on the Virginia basketball program, leading the Cavaliers to the program’s only national championship in 2019. Now, Bennett’s name will be added to the court at John Paul Jones Arena.

The court will be named in Bennett’s honor during a pre-game ceremony on Jan. 24, before No. 16 UVA hosts No. 14 North Carolina, the school announced Friday.

“Coach Bennett built a culture rooted in integrity, discipline and excellence—one that elevated Virginia men’s basketball into a national power,” Director of Athletics Carla Williams said in a statement. “His impact on our University, our athletic department, and the broader community endures, and we look forward to this special occasion to honor his remarkable legacy at UVA.”

Bennett was a three-time National Coach of the Year and went 433-169 overall in 18 seasons, including a 69-33 mark and a pair of NCAA tournament appearances at Washington State from 2007-09. In 2019, he led the Cavaliers to the national championship.
