CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The Virginia Department of Elections has certified the Nov. 3 election results, revealing the actual margins of victory for Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger, Lieutenant Governor-elect Ghazala Hashmi and Attorney General-elect Jay Jones, the Democrats who swept the races at the top of the statewide ballot.
Spanberger, who is scheduled to be sworn in as the Commonwealth’s first female governor on Jan. 17, 2026, defeated Republican Winsome Earle-Sears 1,976,857-1,449,586, a margin of over 520,000 votes. Spanberger claimed 57.6% of the vote.
Hashmi, a state senator, defeated former conservative talk radio personality John Reid 1,900,104-1,505,395, garnering 55.7% of the votes.
The closest of the three statewide races was Jones victory over Republican incumbent attorney general Jason Miyares. Dragged down by a violent text messaging scandal, Jones only defeated Miyares by 227,097 votes. Jones received 53.1% of the votes.
Democrats picked up 13 additional seats in the House of Delegates.
Locally at the state level, Democrats Katrina Callsen (54th district) and Amy Laufer (55) ran unopposed and won re-election.
The Commonwealth’s closest race came in the 69th district, where Democrat Mark Downey defeated Republican Chad Green 19,461-18,171, a margin of just 1,290 votes. Downey won with 49.8% of the vote.
The 69th contains parts of Gloucester, James City, Newport News and York Counties.
