CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Virginia is one of just two states holding an election for its governor on Tuesday, and experts expect that headline-grabbing race atop the ballot should bring a strong voter turnout to the polls.

The competition between Democratic nominee Abigail Spanberger and Republican Winsome Earle-Sears is one being watched nationally, and Democratic attorney general Jay Jones’s violent text messaging scandal has elevated the attention on his race against Republican incumbent Jason Miyares.

54th District Delegate Katrina Callsen and 55th District Delegate Amy Laufer, both Democrats, are running unopposed.

Locally, there are only four contested races on ballots in Charlottesville and Albemarle County.

In the county, Fred Missel and Scott Smith are vying to become the Samuel Miller district’s representative on the Board of Supervisors.

Missel, a Democrat, has been the chairperson of both the county’s Planning Commission and its Architectural Review Board. Smith, a Republican, is a local businessman who works in enterprise software.

Also in the county, in the Rio District, Leslie Pryor seeks to retain her seat on the Albemarle School Board, but faces a challenge from Jim Dillenbeck.

Pryor, an incumbent board member and former juvenile probation officer, was appointed in January to the vacancy created by Chuck Pace’s death. Dillenbeck, a former teacher, who ran and lost to Pace in 2024.

In Scottsville, Molly Angevine and Edward Payne Jr. are running to fill the unexpired term left open by Meredith Haynes’s departure last October. Angevine is currently the town’s Planning Commissioner. Payne is a former council member who was narrowly defeated in a 2024 bid to become the mayor.

In Charlottesville, four candidates are vying for three spots on the city’s School Board.

Incumbents Lisa Larson-Torres and Emily Dooley are attempting to retain their seats, while newcomers Zyahna Bryant and Dashad Cooper are vying to joint the board.
