CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Virginia Department of Transportation contractors have begun work on the first phase of construction to replace the Fontaine Avenue Extended bridge over Morey Creek in Albemarle County.
As part of the work, Fontaine Avenue Extended will be reduced to a single narrowed travel lane across the bridge that will be controlled by temporary traffic signals on each end. The nearby adjacent intersections, Buckingham Circle and a commercial entrance, will also be signalized. The temporary signals will allow one direction of traffic to cross at a time until the project’s completion, which is scheduled for spring of 2027. All work is weather permitting; motorists should expect delays and use caution in the work zone.
The Fontaine Avenue Extended bridge carries approximately 1,700 vehicles per day. The existing concrete slab bridge was built in 1932 and is considered structurally deficient. VDOT will replace the structure with a new box culvert that meets current design and safety standards.
