CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW)- A GoFundMe has been set up to support the recovery of Danville City Councilor Lee Vogler, who was attacked and burned last month.

On July 30, Vogler was doused in gasoline and set on fire by a person known to him outside the premises of Showcase Magazine, the publication for which he the 38-year-old works as the Director of Marketing.

Vogler suffered both second and third degree burns in the attack, which stemmed from a personal situation and was not related to politics.

With an arduous and painful recovery process ahead of him, the GoFundMe page has a goal of $100,000 to help pay Vogler’s medical bills.  As of Tuesday morning, donations have exceeded $82,000 dollars, thanks in part to two separate $10,000 gifts.

Shotsie Michael Buck-Hayes has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated malicious wounding after the attack. He told authorities that his goal was to kill Vogler.

Buck-Hayes allegedly found his way inside Vogler’s workplace and doused him with gas. Vogler ran outside to get away with Buck-Hayes behind him. Buck-Hayes is accused of then lighting him on fire. Police say it was personal attack unrelated to Vogler’s political position.

Vogler was first taken to a Lynchburg burn unit, then airlifted to the UNC Chapel Hill Burn Clinic.

Vogler is the youngest person ever to serve on the Danville City Council, elected to the position back in 2012, at the age of 24.
