CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) The University of Virginia’s Board of Visitors was scheduled to meet virtually Wednesday, the body’s first assembly since President Jim Ryan’s resignation. But about four minutes after the scheduled 11:30 a.m. start time, the YouTube feed ended and an update to the school’s website said the meeting had been canceled.

The school had announced the meeting, which would have included both an open and a closed session, Tuesday evening, stating the reason as being, “to discuss a faculty resignation matter.”

Ryan resigned Friday in the face of a Department of Justice investigation into UVA’s compliance with federal admissions laws and diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. While the Trump administration has ordered the elimination of DEI programs, Ryan has long been an advocate for them.

Ryan has said his last day will be no later than Aug. 15. Jennifer “J.J.” Davis, UVA’s chief operating officer, will be the acting president after Ryan steps down, until an interim president is appointed. A national search has begun for Ryan’s permanent replacement.

This also would have been the first Board of Visitors meeting since the General Assembly’s Senate Privileges and Elections Committee rejected Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s selection of Ken Cuccinelli to replace the fired Bert Ellis. Youngkin contends, since the selection has not had a chance to be considered by the full General Assembly, Cuccinelli can currently serve on the board until that happens.

However, the Senate leadership, which is a Democratic majority, believes that, since Cuccinelli has not been confirmed by the General Assembly, and failed to pass “a threshold vote” in the committee, he cannot. Cuccinelli served in the BOV’s early June meeting, but that was before the Senate committee vote.

This will be the first meeting for new rector Rachel Sheridan, who took over that position Tuesday. Robert Hardie’s final day as BOV rector was Monday.
