CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) Charlottesville Media Group’s May 21-22 “Cares For Kids Radiothon” raised over $60,000 to support patients at UVA Children’s Health.

CMG officials presented a check to UVA Children’s Health Thursday for $60,752, bringing the total the company has helped raise over the past decade to $593,710.

“Part of our mission statement here at the Charlottesville Media Group is, ‘Give where you live,'” Paul McDaniel, Charlottesville Media Group’s Operations Manager, told Cville Right Now. “That’s exactly where the money we raised goes, to the families in the UVA hospitals.”

Radiothon is an annual event held to raise funds for UVA Health Children’s Hospital. The event features inspiring stories from families and hospital staff, celebrating the hospital’s commitment to providing lifesaving care for children.

“We have real people coming in here every hour, if not multiple times an hour. And whether they’re nurses or doctors or parents, they have an amazing story to tell about how great this hospital is,” said McDaniel.

According to UVA Health, the money raised will support several initiatives, including expansion of the neonatal intensive care unit and pediatric intensive care unit, a family-centered care program, which includes helping families with unexpected expenses during their child’s hospital stay, pediatric health research, UVA Health Children’s pediatric cardiology program and UVA Health Children’s pediatric cancer program.

“Our annual Radiothon tells a story that many in Central Virginia might not know.  And that’s just how many families from all over Virgina are served each year at UVA Health Children’s,” CMG President and General Manager Garrett Klingel told Cville Right Now. “Over 130,000 children were treated in 2024. Over half of these families depend on financial aid, whether that’s help with mileage to get back and forth, hotel stays, help with meals.  All while going through what is sometimes a very scary point in their lives. So, to see the Charlottesville community step up to support these kids and their families, year after year, is such a testament to the heart and compassion of where we call home.”

Charlottesville Media Group has run the Radiothon for 10 years, a commitment UVA Health wanted to recognize.

“The sense of pride really hit when I saw that number for 10 years,” said McDaniel. “The money raised is for taking care of the families that, for lack of a better term, are stuck in the hospital.”
