LYNDHURST, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) — One man is dead after a boat capsized in an Augusta County lake Tuesday afternoon.

A 911 call came in at approximately 3:10pm, stating a person had gone under water and had not resurfaced off Mountain Side Lane in the Lyndhurst area.

According to Augusta County Sheriff Donald Smith, the incident occurred while the victim and a friend were on the lake attempting to move a floating dock. During the process, the boat they were using began taking on water and eventually capsized, throwing both men into the lake. One male was able to make it out of the water; however, the second male submerged and did not resurface.

Emergency personnel from Preston Yancey Fire Department, Augusta County Fire and Rescue, Waynesboro First Aid Crew, Waynesboro Fire Department, and New Hope Fire Department responded to the scene. First responders arrived at approximately 3:31 p.m.

The Virginia State Police Search & Rescue and Underwater Recovery Unit also responded to assist in the operation. The submerged victim was located, recovered from the water, and was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident concluded at 12:42 a.m. Wednesday.

The victim has been identified as 84-year-old John Joseph Lacy Jr. of Waynesboro.
