Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – CBS News business analyst Jill Schlesinger made her return to Morning News this week, just in time to mark Financial Literacy Month. “It’s been a crazy April,” Schlesinger said, noting that she’s been fielding numerous questions about economic policy and financial planning. Her top inquiry? Whether the President can fire the Federal Reserve chair, a topic she called one of her favorites.
Schlesinger clarified that the Federal Reserve, established by Congress in 1913, is intentionally independent to avoid political interference. “You can fire a Fed official for cause. Cause would be embezzlement… but that has not happened,” she explained, adding that while the President may be frustrated, it’s unlikely Jerome Powell could be dismissed without clear misconduct.
She also addressed growing public concern over Social Security amid government budget cuts. “Social Security… the benefits, they’re not going to be cut. Take a deep breath. You’re OK,” Schlesinger reassured listeners, while advising against early claiming unless absolutely necessary. As always, she encouraged listeners to continue learning through her website and weekly show, Jill on Money.
