Albemarle County, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – As daylight saving time begins on Sunday, commuters will find themselves driving in darker conditions Monday morning, raising concerns about drowsy driving. Officer John Vanwitzenberg of the Albemarle County Police Department emphasized the importance of recognizing signs of fatigue. “One of the things that we definitely want to talk to people about is just being able to recognize signs of drowsiness,” he said. He advised drivers to stay alert, especially on monotonous roads or during extended trips.
Drowsy driving poses significant risks, comparable to driving under the influence, according to research cited by Officer Vanwitzenberg. “Drowsy driving is right up there with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” he stated, noting that it can make drivers up to eight times more likely to crash. Pedestrians are also urged to take extra precautions, wearing bright clothing and using sidewalks when possible.
Looking ahead to St. Patrick’s Day, law enforcement will increase patrols to ensure road safety amid celebrations. Officer Vanwitzenberg encouraged partygoers to plan ahead. “Try to make sure that you set yourself up for success so that you can get home safe,” he advised. Last year, Virginia saw 80 alcohol-related crashes on St. Patrick’s Day, resulting in six deaths. Officers will maintain an increased presence to prevent tragedies and ensure public safety.
