LOUISA, VA (CVILLERIGHTNOW) – The Louisa County Animal Shelter is at critical capacity and is urging the community to assist by adopting, fostering, or reclaiming lost pets. To help alleviate overcrowding, the county is waiving all adoption fees.

Pet owners who have lost an animal are encouraged to check the shelter’s online stray listings and call 540-894-4219 for retrieval arrangements. The shelter also advises residents who find lost pets to attempt to reunite them with their owners before bringing them in, as pets have a higher chance of returning home when kept in their familiar neighborhood.

The county provides a Foster an Animal Form.

For those who can no longer keep their pets, the shelter recommends rehoming them through platforms such as Rehome.adoptapet.com, Getyourpet.com, Rehomeyourpets.com, and Home-Home.org. Additionally, the shelter offers flexible foster programs, ranging from short-term stays to foster-to-adopt arrangements.

Free same-day pet adoptions are available, and images of adoptable animals can be viewed at louisacounty.gov/animalshelter. The shelter, located at 18 Sacred Heart Avenue in Mineral, is open for adoptions Tuesday through Saturday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
