ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VA (CVILLERIGHTNOW) – During its first cleanup in December, Albemarle County’s Roadway Litter Collection Program removed 1,564 bags of litter from approximately 300 miles of roadway. The initial effort targeted high-priority areas with the most litter, including North Milton Road, Richmond Road (U.S. 250) from Stony Point Road to I-64, Peter Jefferson Parkway, and Seminole Trail (U.S. 29) from Polo Grounds to Airport Road. Funded by the Disposable Plastic Bag Tax, the program is part of Albemarle County’s effort to tackle the issues created by roadside litter, such as clogged storm drains, risks to wildlife, and roadway safety concerns. The next cleanup is scheduled for March, with an additional 300 miles of roadway set to be addressed.
Other programs dealing with the issue include the street sweeper “Sweeping Beauty,” vegetation control managed by VDOT, and community-led cleanups supported by programs like VDOT’s Adopt-a-Highway, C’ville Litter Pickers, and the Rivanna Conservation Alliance. According to a release from the county, you can report litter or hazards through VDOT’s reporting tool or by contacting Albemarle Facilities and Environmental Services (FESinquiry@albemarle.org or 434-296-5832).
