Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Albemarle County Police Chief Colonel Sean Reeves reflected on the department’s progress and upcoming priorities on Morning News, marking the start of 2025. Reeves, who is nearing his three-year anniversary as chief, discussed topics ranging from traffic safety to mental health response.

Colonel Reeves highlighted a significant 22% reduction in fatal crashes in 2024 compared to the previous year, attributing the progress to public safety campaigns and the commitment of the police force. “We did see a 22% decrease in fatal crashes in the county from 2023,” he said. “The goal is to drive those numbers to zero.” Reeves emphasized the importance of responsible driving behavior, including wearing seat belts and avoiding distractions.

On mental health, Reeves noted an increase in calls for service but credited the department’s Human Services Alternative Response Team (HART) for its proactive approach. “We are spending an intentional amount of time with individuals that are experiencing crises,” he said, adding that the team plans to expand by hiring two additional staff members in 2025. Reeves also highlighted the need to destigmatize mental health issues, stating, “We are essentially criminalizing those that are suffering from a medical condition… mental health trauma, that is a medical condition. And what other the medical condition exists out there where you send men and women with badges and guns to respond to somebody who has a mental crisis.”

As Albemarle County looks ahead, Reeves reaffirmed his department’s dedication to creating safety and well-being through innovative strategies and community engagement.
