Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Mark Lorenzoni, a community coach, running and fitness ambassador, and retired business owner, joined Morning News to discuss the vibrant running culture in the area and upcoming events. He emphasized the importance of starting the year with movement, highlighting the positive impact of fitness on the community.

“This is one of my favorites… a New Year’s Day 5K, Lorenzoni said. Hosted by the Charlottesville Track Club, the event offers a late 11 a.m. start, allowing participants to enjoy a casual run or walk while supporting local causes. All the money goes to a local cause, and the club raised over $300,000 last year through events like this.

Reflecting on 2024, Lorenzoni highlighted achievements such as UVA’s men’s team winning the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championship and the growth of local running programs, with over 500 people participating in training initiatives. He also mentioned that over 300 people, who had not been exercising before, were now currently training for the 10-miler and had reached 3.5 miles, noting, ‘If you can imagine, they were zero in October. Yeah, a lot to be proud of.’

Lorenzoni also addressed challenges faced by those recovering from pandemic-induced sedentary lifestyles, emphasizing gradual steps toward fitness. His advocacy continues to create a supportive and inclusive environment for runners and walkers of all abilities in the Charlottesville area.
