On Friday morning, October 18, 2024, Lucy (Marin) Anderson Grooms departed this life at the home of her son, Derrick with family present. She was born on June 5, 1939, in Palmyra, Virginia, the daughter of the late Woodrow and Estelle Payne. Lucy was preceded in death by her brother, Barry Woodrow Payne, Jr.; sister-in-law, Gracie Payne; brother-in-law Ivory Davis, Jr; former husband, Swanson Anderson; stepdaughter, Cassandra Grooms; and niece, Lydia Pate.
Lucy leaves to mourn her husband, Alfred Grooms; sister, Constance Davis, Daytona Beach, FL.; son, Derrick Payne, Charlottesville, VA; step-daughter, Fatina Grooms, Northern, VA; three sisters-in-law, Alberta Coffey, Mary Virginia Ragland, (MacArthur), and Mattie Lee, all of Louisa, VA; one brother-in-law, Earl Grooms (Merry), Louisa, VA; two daughters-in-law, Dorothy Jeff (Vern) and Angela Thacker (Ken); three grandchildren, Quinncee J. Payne, Arlington, VA, DeeVa Payne Kaplan (Marc), Richmond, VA, and Dekker Payne (Amber), Scottsville, VA; one great-granddaughter, Synder Payne; three nieces, Michael Walker (Fredo), Daytona Beach, FL, Gwendolyn Young (Steve), Odenton, MD, and Yolanda Maurice (Ross), Richmond, VA; one nephew, Barry Rydell Payne (Hope) Louisa, VA; two great-nieces, Leisa Paton and Dajah Harris-Maurice; five great-nephews, Joshua, Joseph, Isaac, Carlton and Malachi; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Lucy was educated in Fluvanna County Schools, graduating from S.C. Abrams High School in 1957. She worked in the dry-cleaning industry for well over 45 years. After retirement, she rejoined the workforce with her last job at The Goodwill until her illness.

Lucy joined The St. James Baptist Church at an early age. She was a dedicated soldier of the cross. She participated in numerous church functions, including the choir. Lucy loved to sing and praise God. Lucy was well-known in the community and always had a kind word to say. She enjoyed her family and friends, especially those family dinners during the holidays. She was grateful for the birth of her great-granddaughter. Lucy will be missed by those who knew her. Heaven added an angel.
