COLUMBIA, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The Route 690 (Columbia Road) bridge over the James River at Columbia in Fluvanna County is closed until later today due to a large pothole in the pavement and erosion on the shoulder at the south end of the bridge in Cumberland County. The damage was discovered Wednesday afternoon, and an inspection determined that traffic should not use the bridge until it is repaired. Those repairs started this morning and will be complete at a time to be determined today. Until the bridge reopens, motorists should use the James River bridges on U.S. 15 (James Madison Highway) at Bremo Bluff or Route 45 (Cartersville Road) at Cartersville as alternate river crossings.
