Barboursville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – In a unique blend of speech therapy and therapeutic riding, the local nonprofit Speaking of Horses is helping children with disabilities break through communication barriers. Ada Haensel, a 2022 UVA graduate in Communication Sciences and Disorders, founded the organization, combining her passion for horses and therapy.

Haensel explained the genesis of her nonprofit during a recent interview: “I really wanted to bring speech therapy and therapeutic riding together and so that’s when I created Speaking of Horses.” With four horses and around 15 clients, the program has grown, offering a natural, open environment where children can develop speech skills while interacting with horses.

The interaction between children and horses offers a calming rhythm that aids therapy, particularly for kids on the autism spectrum. “The rhythm of the horse soothes a lot of kids, especially kids on the autism spectrum, but it’s great for everybody,” Haensel shared, highlighting the holistic benefits of the sessions. Haensel’s program stands as a testament to the power of combining nature, animals, and therapy to create communication and confidence in children.
