Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW): The season has begun for the Virginia Swim & Dive team, fresh off seeing some of its members win many medals in Paris, France at the Olympic Games this past summer, supervised by their coach, Todd DeSorbo, who led Team USA. Ahead of their dual meet clash with #2 ranked Florida this weekend, an addition has been made to Virginia’s decorated roster. Top rated class of 2024 recruit Kate Grimes is set to join UVA Swim & Dive in January of 2025. She first earned international acclaim as the youngest member of Team USA Swim & Dive at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, where she finished fourth in the 800m Freestyle at 15 years old. Grimes racked up more accolades in that time, and after graduating high school in Las Vegas, she competed for Team USA again in Paris. In the 2024 games, not only did she win silver in the 400m, an event she won at the Olympic trials in June, she also became the first American woman to compete in both pool and open water swimming in the same games, placing 15th in the 10km swim in the Seine River. Grimes’ promising young career has taken its next twist, and fortunately for UVA fans, it has led her to Charlottesville to be coached by, and compete with, some of the best swimmers in the nation.
