CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The IRS has announced tax relief for individuals and businesses impacted by Helene in parts of Virginia. Affected taxpayers will now have until May 1, 2025, to file federal tax returns and make payments.

This relief applies to residents and businesses in Galax, Grayson, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise, and Wythe counties. Deadlines originally set after September 25, 2024, for tax filings and payments have been extended through May 1, 2025.

The extension covers various filings, including quarterly estimated tax payments, payroll taxes, and excise taxes. Penalties for late deposits of payroll and excise taxes due between September 25 and October 10, 2024, will be waived if made by October 10.

Taxpayers automatically eligible for relief do not need to apply, but those outside the covered disaster area can request assistance by contacting the IRS disaster hotline.
