Helen Christine Byers, 92, of North Garden, VA, was called home on September 19th, 2024. Born on February 12, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Alma Queen Byers-Watkins. Helen was preceded in death by her mother, Alma Queen Byers Watkins; her stepfather, Thomas Watkins Sr.; her son, David Grant Byers; and her siblings: four sisters-Louise Watkins, Mary Walker, Nancy Ross, and Bertha “DeeDee” Watkins-and four brothers-Thomas Watkins Jr., Andrew Watkins, Richard Watkins, and Johnny Watkins.
Helen’s life is a testament to love and dedication. Growing up in North Garden, she had to pause her education to help her mother care for her younger sibling, demonstrating her strong sense of responsibility early on. Her deep connection to the Rising Sun Baptist Church in North Garden, VA, where she actively participated for over 80 years, reflects her strong faith and commitment to her community.
Helen cherished travel and enjoyed spending time with friends on “Henry Ave” which brought her much joy. Helen was known for cooking or baking something pound cake, vegetable soup, mac & cheese and chitterlings. Helen loved a new car, with her initials on her license plate. As a dedicated member of the June Knights club, she held a special place in her heart for the group and was proud to be the last surviving member.
Helen was known for her strong work ethic, starting her first job at the University of Virginia as a young girl. She also spent over 15 years at Cedars Nursing Home and provided private sitting services, taking on various jobs throughout her life. Her most notable role was with the Dent family, where she forged a deep and lasting bond. They embraced her as family, and Helen reciprocated that love wholeheartedly during her years with them, leaving a lasting impact on their lives.
Known for her generosity, Helen was a strong support to her family, she often welcomed those in need into her home, embodying kindness and compassion.
Helen’s legacy is one of unwavering support and a deep commitment to family and God.
Helen Christine Byers is survived by her son, Michael Ray Byers (Thelma) of Greene County, VA, and her devoted sister, Lena S. Terrell of Charlottesville, VA.
She leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Michael Jr., Natasha, Nathan, Antonio, Alan, Condu, and her devoted grandson, David “Tweety” L. Byers, as well as her granddaughter, Christine. Helen is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews who will remember her with love.
