CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW)– As Hurricane Helene sweeps through Virginia, local real estate expert Quinton Beckham from KW Alliance is urging homeowners to use the storm as a reminder to reassess their insurance policies. With severe weather becoming more common, Beckham emphasized the need for preparedness, pointing out that rising insurance rates are a response to increased risks from natural disasters. “Homeowners insurance in particular has climbed about 20% in Virginia over the last several years, much of that due to disasters across the country,” Beckham said.
He also stressed the importance of understanding what homeowners’ insurance covers—especially when it comes to flood damage. “Homeowners insurance goes up because we have hurricane and flooding events, but it also doesn’t cover floods,” Beckham explained, noting that many homeowners may not be aware of gaps in their coverage. “Only 51% of homeowners know the details of their policy… 47% of them pick a policy and never look at it again,” he added.
Beckham advises residents to review their policies, check FEMA flood zone maps, and consider flood insurance. He also suggests an “annual audit” of insurance policies to ensure the right coverage and possibly save on premiums.
