Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Despite the rain, nearly 2,000 volunteers gathered in Charlottesville for the 33rd annual United Way Day of Caring, a hallmark event celebrating community service and philanthropy. Ravi Respeto, President and CEO of United Way of Greater Charlottesville, expressed the team’s enthusiasm for the day: “We wait basically all year for this day of community giving… Even in the rain, people are rain or shine.”

The Day of Caring brings together volunteers from diverse backgrounds to support local nonprofits through hands-on projects. This year, efforts included a downtown mall cleanup and a drive to collect medical supplies for people with disabilities. “It’s really a day about serving nonprofits when throughout the year they don’t necessarily get that kind of support… when you’ve got 2,000 people focused on raising money, raising resources and then giving up their time, that’s what today is about,” Respeto said.

Dr. Norman Oliver, the newly appointed Board Chair of United Way of Greater Charlottesville, emphasized the deeper purpose behind the event. ” It’s really important that we understand that a connected community where we’re all supporting one another is a way for us to uplift everyone in the community, especially those who are the most vulnerable.”

The United Way Day of Caring serves as a powerful reminder of how community spirit can foster long-lasting change.
