Bruce Hobbs was born in Englewood N. J. and lived in Grantwood, N.J. until 1940 when his parents, Kathryn Warner Hobbs, and Charles Roderick Bruce Hobbs,Sr. moved to Richmond, Virginia.

There he was graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and went onto went on to V.P.I. He originally pursued a degree in chemistry, but in the beginning of his junior year he pivoted toward the study of geology. After receiving a Bachelor of Science in Geology in 1952, he earned a Master of Science in 1954 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1957. He was the first student to graduate with a doctorate in geology at V.P.I., as well as being the first recipient of such in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Upon graduation he moved to Charlottesville, Virginia and joined the staff of the Virginia Division of Mineral Resources, and later married Anne Pierce in 1962. He retired in September I99I as Deputy State Geologist, and Deputy Commissioner of Mineral Resources. He served that agency to provide scientific/technical reviews, editing, office management, budget, procurement, physical plant maintenance, personnel, etc.

There is no remaining immediate family.
