Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Dr. Caroline Tippett, a podiatrist at UVA Health, provided valuable insights into peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and the critical role of foot health. Dr. Tippett, who specializes in treating patients with artery diseases, emphasized the importance of recognizing early symptoms and making lifestyle changes to prevent serious complications.
“PAD stands for peripheral arterial disease, and this is a narrowing of the arteries… this can cause non-healing ulcers or sores on the feet and the legs, and this can lead to amputation,” Dr. Tippett explained, highlighting the severity of the condition.
She also shared tips on prevention, emphasizing that not smoking and diabetes management are crucial. “Smoking puts you at a three times greater risk of developing artery disease… uncontrolled diabetes also puts you at a greater risk.”
Dr. Tippett encouraged listeners to attend the Green Health and Wellness Fun Fair on September 15th for free screenings and more educational resources.
