Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – In a recent interview, Bob Roberts, a political analyst from James Madison University, shared his insights into the evolving legal and political challenges facing former President Donald Trump. Speaking by phone, Roberts explained, “When he was in office and discussing with the Vice President or other executive branch officials about dealing with the election, that is guaranteed immunity from the supreme court. But when he’s talking with state officials, such as finding votes in Georgia or other states… he’s acting as a political candidate and not as a president.” This distinction is central to the ongoing legal battles Trump faces, particularly in relation to the January 6th events and presidential immunity.

Roberts also weighed in on the recent controversy surrounding Trump’s visit to Arlington National Cemetery, where a worker attempted to prevent the former president’s entry, citing federal laws that ban political activity at the site. “The Trump campaign has doubled down… accusing Army hacks of creating this controversy,” Roberts noted, emphasizing the ongoing tension between Trump’s campaign and military officials.

As the conversation turned to the potential impact of these issues on the upcoming election, Roberts suggested that Trump’s strategy of doubling down on his base could alienate certain voters, particularly in light of recent controversies.

The interview concluded with Roberts reflecting on the tight race, indicating that the outcome will likely hinge on targeted voter outreach. Liten to the full conversation here:
