RICHMOND, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Governor Youngkin has issued an executive order implementing initiatives toward successful return to life for those leaving Virginia’s prisons and jails. The “Stand Tall, Stay Strong, Succeed Together Re-Entry Initiative” supports inmates released into probation helping them with job training, employment efforts, benefits enrollment, and successful parenthood. Youngkin tells WINA’s Morning News more than half of those currently incarcerated have recidivated, and that’s not acceptable and needs to be addressed.
In pilot programs that have operated in several arenas leading to this Executive Order, the Governor says “since April 2023, the Team has helped 3100 more returning citizens gain employment, 7100 more enroll in health insurance, and updated appropriate supervision levels for 5500 returning citizens by focusing on six success factors”.
The Executive Order also includes the Secretary of Public Safety to review methodology for tracking re-entries… and identify changes to improve probationary supervision.
