AUGUSTA COUNTY, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) –Virginia State Police are investigating the deaths of two pedestrians in a crash that happened Saturday night around 9 p.m. on Route 11 (Lee Highway), just north of Weyers Cave Road in Augusta County.
According to police, a 2003 Dodge Caravan was heading northbound on Route 11 when it struck two pedestrians who were crossing the highway. 83-year-olds Opal C. Nelson and 72-year-old Carolyn M. Childress, both of Staunton, died at the scene.
The driver of the Caravan, 39-year-old Danielle N. Bennington of Mount Crawford, and a passenger, 37-year-old Joshua P. Compton, suffered minor injuries.
Following the crash, Virginia State Police arrested 41-year-old Kristopher E. Nelson of Staunton after he refused to leave the scene. Nelson was charged with disorderly conduct, misdemeanor obstruction, and two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer.
The crash remains under investigation.
