NELSON COUNTY, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Virginia State Police are looking into a fatal crash that happened just after 7 p.m. on Sunday on Route 29 southbound at the intersection with Tye Brook Highway.

Police say a 2001 GMC Sierra was heading south on Route 29 when it hit a 2019 Ram 1500 that had entered the intersection.

The Ram then struck two road signs and came to a stop in the median, where it caught fire.

The driver of the Ram, 75-year-old Avis W. Armentrout, Jr. of Roseland, died at the scene. A passenger in the Ram, 74-year-old Martha J. Armentrout, was seriously injured and taken to a hospital.

The driver of the Sierra, a 16-year-old girl from Nelson County, also suffered serious injuries and was transported to a hospital.

The investigation is ongoing.
