James “Jimmy” Fazio, 74, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2024, in Crozet, Va. Born on April 30, 1950, in Bronx, N.Y., he was a beloved figure in his community and a dedicated volunteer.

James graduated from Plainview High School, Long Island, N.Y. in 1969 and shortly thereafter served six years in the U.S. Navy where he received the National Defense Service Medal. His navy tenure included four years of active service in Scotland and stations in various locations, including Norfolk Shipyard. His military service also included two voyages to the Mediterranean, engaging in operations across Morocco, Italy, Greece, Serbia, and Montenegro.

Following his military service and time in the Naval Reserve, James embarked on a career with the Long Island Railroad Credit Union. He retired after more than two decades in 1981. He also worked at 1-800 Flowers and Plow and Hearth.

A resident of English Meadows Assisted Living since 2011, James was deeply involved in his community. He was an active volunteer known for his generosity and helpful nature, and served for several years as President of the Resident Council. He could often be found manning the front desk, coordinating Bingo, hosting Wii tournaments, organizing movie nights and participating in resident council meetings. During his residency, his volunteer efforts earned him numerous gold JABA Presidential volunteer awards.

James was an avid bowler and a passionate fan of Star Trek and Star Wars–pursuits that brought him much joy throughout his life.

He is survived by his five sisters, Suzanne Sheridan of Westport, Conn., Patricia Field of Ronkonkoma N.Y., Christine Erskine of Keswick Va., Lorraine Haney of Barboursville, Va., and Karen Trickett of Richmond, Va.; along with four nephews, three nieces, two great nephews and two great nieces. He is also survived by his beloved cat, Penelope. He was preceded in death by his parents, John J. and Catherine M. Fazio.

James’ family would like to thank the wonderful staff and administration of English Meadows Crozet Campus for their kind and attentive care throughout the years. A very special thank you to Stephanie Woodson who took care of him as if he were a member of her own family.
