CULPEPER (VDOT) – The Virginia Department of Transportation and contractor Curtis Contracting, Inc. will open a new two-lane hybrid roundabout on Route 743 Hydraulic Road at Hillsdale Drive one week earlier than expected.

The work was originally expected to be completed on Tuesday, Aug. 13.

Beginning Tuesday, Aug. 6, the detour will lift, and the roadway will open, allowing drivers to access U.S. 29 from Hydraulic Road. Please use caution when navigating through the new intersection.

While the detour will be lifted, crews will remain in the area as they complete punch list items for the roundabout.

The roundabout is one of four project elements that will improve safety and efficient movement as well as increase multi-modal access within the Hydraulic Road and U.S. 29 area. The other elements include:

  • A pedestrian bridge over U.S. 29 with bus stops for future service near Zan Road.
  • A signalized pedestrian crossing and reconfigured traffic movements at the Hydraulic Road and U.S. 29 intersection.
  • Improved access management at the Hydraulic Road/Brandywine Drive and Hydraulic Road/Michie Drive intersections.

The four transportation improvements are funded for a combined $24 million through the SMART SCALE process. For more information about the project elements, visit Hydraulic Road and U.S. 29 transportation improvements
